On location once again from Hayes State Park in the beautiful Irish Hills! Yesterday, August 29th was Larry’s first Gotcha Day! We brought him home a year ago yesterday and went straight to the campsite for Labor Day weekend. It’s been a fast year. He turned a year old on approximately 7/20/25 and is now 17 lbs. Where Bill works, a stray cat had her kittens under a guard shack. We haven’t had a pet in years and I was missing having a cat again.
When I saw those blue eyes, I melted. They don’t last, of course, all kittens have blue eyes when they’re born. Larry’s are yellow now.

My sister taught us a new card game called Tens, also known as Trash. I’m really not a card game person but this was fun! I’m already thinking about where my deck of cards is stashed at home to make sure I bring them next time.

Today is shaping up to be a gorgeous sunny day with only a high of 72. Pleasant day, but I miss the warmer weather already. My older sister, whom I camp cook with is not with us this weekend, but in her honor I made Mexican Coleslaw, which we had planned to make last time but never did.
OMG.

It was FANTASTIC. Highly recommend and I will probably make this again and again.
Walking around the campground is a common activity when we’re here, getting out to enjoy the sunshine and to also walk off all the yumminess that we cook every holiday weekend. Coming back from our walk, I found some fungus in the woods that Google Lens said was chicken of the woods, which is slightly unnerving. I’d heard of it, but had never seen any in the wild.

We inflated my new paddleboard today! This thing is bigger than I thought it would be! It’s 11ft, one foot longer than my kayak, but it’s wider than I expected, . I feel better about taking it out today, which is only a high of 72F. The water, I’m sure, is warm this time of year, but the air will feel freezing if I go in.

I love it and can’t wait to go! Just waiting for this cloud to pass.
How was your week?

I had forgotten the Monkees mug. Lucky Larry, from half feral to a pro at camping. Speaking of camping, enjoy the long weekend at Hayes State Park!
Thank you Trent! The credit goes to you, for the idea of using a specific mug for each location. 🙂 Larry got comfortable quick, lounges around like he owns the place. LOL
It looks like a lovely place! My ex-husband was very much into survival skills of all kind and once served me chicken of the woods during a hike. I’d say that I prefer actual chicken.
OMG! I guess it would to good to know, in an emergency..
I am going to look up that card game. I played Phase Ten for the time first time this summer. It is a fun game.
It was really fun! The link I shared outlines it all. I’ve played Phase 10 as well, that is a good one.
It makes me happy that Larry found you. Hope you have many more years together.
Living vicariously through your many adventures in nature.
Thank you Michelle! I enjoy following along your adventures as well! Thank you so much for reading!
We love playing card games. I followed the link and saved the rules 🙂
Hope you like it! I enjoyed playing more than I thought I would.
I love the sound of this card game and have saved the rules. For some reason I could not post directly onto your blog only via reader
It was fun! Thank you for letting me know! I’ll take a peek.
