#SundayPaddle: Wolverine Lake

#SundayPaddle: Wolverine Lake

Well, it sure is nice to put a Sunday Paddle post up!  I set a goal for myself to paddle 10 new lakes or rivers in 2025.  I have 9 more to go.

My dear paddle partner, Christy and I, met at Wolverine Lake in Wolverine Lake, MI.  After passing the public launch due to no signage whatsoever, I finally found it and was greeted by a friendly ranger lady who was checking recreational passes. I drove down to the ramp to unload my boat and was surprised to find a dredger of sorts, or at least that is my best guess.  Christy arrived a bit later and said it’s been parked there a few years.

I was also surprised to find this painting, or print, from the Detroit Institute of Arts. I didn’t scan the QR code but it was there for more info.

Yay! Christy and I hadn’t paddled in a while and it was so good to catch up on this beautiful day. It looks like I’m loaded down for an overnight trip but it’s just my PFD, cooler, dry bag and well, I guess I do have luggage that fits under the netting on the stern.

Woohooo!!!  So nice to be back on the water!

The lake was actually pretty busy, several boats going by pulling tubers.  I cracked up at this inflatable weiner dog pull behind.

Bad pic but all I had was my phone and zoomed in quite a bit. Someone was having a ball!

We paddled to the far end of the lake past this “island” of grasses.

This boardwalk runs along Benstein Rd.  Funny story, my husband, back in the 70s used to snowmobile this lake with his Dad.  This was long before the boardwalk path went in.  They’d pick up speed, and actually JUMP Benstein Rd. onto the smaller, frozen body of water on the other side.  Yeeeehaaawwww!!!

My friend, in her happy place. Well, one of them.  She’s traveled so many cool places and I will always live vicariously through her.

Rounding the bend, we discovered Jacob’s Island!   I got closer and saw that this is actually another dock.. There was an old one submerged in the water underneath it.  Hopefully this is some really fortunate kid’s playground.

There looked to be a path that led back into the brush.  How cool.

After that we continued on and then waited for a break in boat traffic to paddle back across the lake to the launch.  This is a large lake with several “legs” so I look forward to coming back and exploring more of it.

Also, this is not my longest kayaking on Strava, I yet again forgot to hit Stop and Finish before driving home. LOL  Thank God for the Crop Activity feature.
