Hike and Seek: Lower Rouge Parkway – Morton Taylor Trailhead

Today was a gorgeous day to meet up with a friend at the Lower Rouge Parkway, at the Morton Taylor trailhead.  Sunny, clear and 84! The mosquitoes were out in full force, and you’d think that in my overflowing daypack I’d have brought bug spray, but no dice.  I’d been here before, but only to work on clearing log jams from the Rouge river. Walking the trails was a first, and I’d get to check this park off my list of 10 new parks or trails for 2025!

We were met by this beautiful goldenrod greeting hikers at the entrance by the parking lot.

Then, a northern leopard frog hopped across our path and was patient enough to let us get a picture before being on his way.

I’ve seen red berries in the woods, but these looked a bit different.  According to Google Lens, they are Amur, or Bush Honeysuckle. Invasive and the berries are toxic in larger quantities.

Some perfectly shaped mushrooms, except for a bite taken out of one.  I learned that this is Dryad’s Saddle, and if cut, smells like cucumber or watermelon rind. Edible according to Google. I wonder if the “bite” was made by someone with a knife wanting to sample it?

Much of the trail system is gravel and easy terrain.

We rounded the corner and my jaw dropped at this BEHEMOTH cottonwood tree!  Those who know me have heard me blather on and on about my love for cottonwood trees!  Their leaves “sparkle” in the wind. I’ve always, always loved them.

His trunk was easily 5 feet in diameter.

Here I am for scale. And I’m 5′ 2″, so I think my estimate is about right.  I’m also guessing he is probably close to a couple hundred years old.  My maple trees are approximately 80ish years old, if they were planted when my house was built. This guy was a decent amount larger. Incredible!

Just a reminder that fall is coming..

Much of the hike was in the hot sunshine until we entered this section of forest.  I love these patches of soft grass!

My friend pointed out some Jack in the Pulpit!  I’d heard of it but had forgotten what it looked like.

I love to see evidence of kids playing in the woods.  As long as it’s all downed branches and nothing cut.  No damage here.

It’s also nice to have shelter in the event of a downpour. Thanks, kids!

I’m 3 down and 7 to go for my 10 new trails goal for 2025!  Since I hike year round, it’s a goal I should be able to reach. I love to hike in the fall and winter.

Thanks for coming along!
